Advancing Cryptosporidium parvum
Detection Methodologies
This study focused on ideal methods of detecting C. parvum
oocysts which give low detection limits, specific and sensitive
detection in concentrated samples, and differentiation of
viable from non-viable oocysts; are usable by a water treatment
facility and provide quantitative results within a few hours.
Potential useful methods are continuous flow centrifugation,
real-time TaqMan PCR, cell culture inoculation followed
by PCR of DNA extraction, and FISH.
Microbial Monitoring of Vulnerable
Public Groundwater Supplies
This study assessed microbial methods for the detection
of pathogens and microbial indicators (enteric viruses and
Legionella pneumophilia) of water quality. Microbial occurrence
data was also collected from raw water samples of fecally-
contaminated public ground water systems. This occurrence
data proved effective in identifying ground water supplies
vulnerable to viral contamination.
Strategic Business Planning as a
Water Resource Management Tool with CD
This book provides a framework for utilities to use
in transforming existing management and planning activities
into a holistic and efficient strategic business planning
approach. Addressed are the challenges faced in managing
the conflicting requirement of SDWA, Clean Water Act, Endangered
Species Act and other federal legislation, tribal rights,
community perception, inter-jurisdictional statutes, state
regulations and competing interests.
Water Protection Reference Manual
A comprehensive water utility guide to source water management
practices and regulations. This CD-ROM provides guidance
in how to form a watershed management plan. It includes
best management practices (BMPs), source water protection-related
government programs and regulations with agency contact
information, and a water supplier experience section.
Water System Security: A Field Guide
with CD
Managers and operations personnel of small to medium-size
water utilities will find this guidebook very helpful as
they assess and upgrade the physical and operational security
of their systems. This guide emphasizes measures that can
be taken for better security against deliberate threats.
It covers the emergency preparedness plan; vulnerability
assessments; mitigation measures for critical components;
emergency response and recovery and crisis communications.
Supplied forms (in print & on Disk) include security
checklist, system component list, potential biological and
chemical threats, emergency contacts and forms.
Companion Video: Water System Security:
A Video Field Guide
This 27-minute video brings to life the concepts and techniques
of the book. It illustrates correct techniques for securing
your utility, pump stations, wellheads and perimeters. It
provides a visual "walkthrough" of correct procedures,
as well as an opportunity to see the latest security technologies
from low-tech protection to high-tech surveillance. Together,
the book and video provide tremendous insights into your
facilities and powerful tools to mitigate threats. Available
in VHS only
Basic Chemistry for Water & Wastewater
Operators
Water and wastewater operators will get the necessary training
they need in this chemistry primer tailored just for them.
The basics of units of measure, acids, bases, salts and
gas laws are covered. This provides the components necessary
to understand the chemistry to properly carry out the chemical
phases of treatment, including coagulation, sedimentation,
softening, hardness, corrosion and disinfection as well
as the basic chemistry necessary in order to pass the operator
certification examinations.
