Activity Description: The program provides new six litre per flush toilets, water efficient showerheads and faucet aerators free of charge to householders and offers the services of pre-qualified plumbing contractors who install toilets for a set fee that was paid by the homeowner. 11,000 households participated in the program and 15,500 older model toilets were replaced by six litre per flush toilets. Water efficient showerheads and faucet aerators were retrofitted in these households as well. Marketing and promotion initiatives were designed to create recognition for the program.

Water Savings Details

Water Savings Volume: 1700 Cubic meters / day
Water Savings Description: Analysis of water bills and use of data loggers before and after fixture replacement revealed that the savings were about 62 litres per capita per day as a result of the replacement of the older toilet, showerhead and faucet aerator with water efficient models.

Description/Comments: The aim was to postpone construction of a large addition to the City wastewater plant. The construction has been postponed, and during the project, the City has been succesful in having the legal capacity of the watewater plant re-rated upwards by the provincial government regulators so that construction has been postponed much longer.

Advice

What Worked Well: The program is expected to achieve savings greater than originally predicted: it could exceed its target by 25%.
