City of Calgary - Watershed Education

Experts on watershed management participating in a recent Water Environment Federation webcast indicated that educating schoolchildren was the most effective way of achieving the changes in personal behaviours which are necessary to protect a watershed. The kids learn some good practices for life and bring the information home to their parents. This is a good example of how this can be accomplished.

The Geological Survey of Canada (GSC, part of Natural Resources Canada) has produced an educational poster for the Bow River Basin in Southern Alberta in conjunction with a number of other stakeholders. View the full poster or look more closely at individual elements from the home page .

The City of Calgary worked with GSC and local educators to take this a significant step further and developed both elementary and junior high education programs loaded with activities to compliment the poster. It has been rolled out in the Calgary school system and reports are that the teachers and kids love it.
